The Massachusetts reach of New England's largest river flows south through the Pioneer Valley from the Vermont/New Hampshire line past Greenfield, Northampton, and Springfield. It is a diverse warmwater and migratory fishery: smallmouth and largemouth bass, walleye, channel catfish, northern pike, and panfish year-round, plus a major spring run of American shad (and sea-run species below the Holyoke Dam fish lift). Slower oxbows and the impoundment above Holyoke Dam hold bass and pike, while the faster reaches near Montague hold smallmouth and walleye.
